The Sant Joan de Reus University Hospital has achieved its blood transfusion adequacy targets for two consecutive months, August and September 2026, for the first time, thanks to the collaborative work of various services and commissions.

The data shows a significant improvement in the center's transfusion practices. The target of 65% for single red blood cell unit (CH) transfusions was exceeded, reaching 67% in August and 81% in September. Similarly, the target of 80% for transfusions with hemoglobin ≤ 8 g/dL was surpassed, with 80.8% in August and 83.3% in September.
The 'Transfusions: Only the Essentials' program promotes avoiding unnecessary transfusions and tailoring indications to each patient's clinical situation. This helps reduce risks and ensures responsible use of blood, a limited resource. The primary recommendation is that, for stable patients without active bleeding, a single unit of red blood cells, preferably with hemoglobin ≤ 8 g/dL, is often the most appropriate strategy before considering further transfusions.
This achievement is the result of the commitment from various clinical services and the joint efforts of the MAPAC Commission, the Hospital Transfusion Committee, and the Blood and Tissue Bank, who have integrated the program's recommendations into daily clinical practice.
Clinical sessions have been held with different services in recent months to disseminate the program's recommendations, review transfusion indication criteria, and facilitate their application in daily practice. This work continues with new sessions aimed at consolidating this improvement and advancing towards higher quality, safer, and value-centered patient care.
