The administrator of the Riudecanyes Reservoir Irrigators Community, Miquel Àngel Prats, proposed on Thursday transferring 10 cubic hectometers of water from the Ebro River to the Siurana reservoir to ensure sufficient water reserves.

The measure, presented during the review of the 2025 campaign, seeks to ensure that the Siurana reservoir, currently at 18% capacity, reaches 80%, provided the flow of the Ebro allows it. Prats stressed that this contribution is crucial to maintain irrigation similar to last year, as the Riudecanyes reservoir needs an additional 2 hm³ on top of the 5 hm³ it currently holds.

"Climate change affects us all; the future of dry farming is increasingly unviable if there are no shared solutions."

The administrator insisted that this connection is not considered a "transfer" because both the Ebro and Siurana belong to the same hydrographic basin, although the water would eventually reach Riudecanyes, which is part of the internal basins managed by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA). Furthermore, Prats offered dialogue to Priorat agents, such as the Comarcal Council, to join the irrigators community and find joint "solutions".
This call for consensus comes after the Supreme Court last year rejected the appeal by the Priorat Comarcal Council against the ruling that maintains the water concession from Siurana to the Riudecanyes community until the year 2061. Prats also warned that the regenerated water plant in Reus will not be operational until 2029 and might not be suitable for irrigating hazelnut trees due to its high salinity.
