The proposal by the agricultural union seeks to reverse the current dynamic, which consists of capturing water from the Ebro transfer during winter and reserving the Riudecanyes reservoir for the summer months. This management, according to Unió de Pagesos, now forces the release of water and jeopardizes reserves ahead of the dry season.
According to data from the beginning of the week of January 26, 2026, and following recent rainfall, the Riudecanyes reservoir is at 99.6% of its capacity, with an accumulated volume of about 5,301 cubic hectometers of water.
The objective is to ensure that the reservoir level does not drop below 80% and that it is supplied exclusively with water from the Riudecanyes stream.
This strategy would, in turn, prevent the need to supplement the reservoir with contributions from the Siurana reservoir and help protect the reserves of both. The union emphasizes that the measure is key for drinking water supply and irrigation in Camp de Tarragona.
In parallel, Unió de Pagesos has reminded the competent administrations of the need to adopt structural measures to ensure long-term water supply. The union has reiterated its demand to expedite procedures to unblock the works for the Reus Wastewater Treatment Plant, an infrastructure they consider vital.
