The Bishopric of Tortosa completed the curative conservation of the Virgin of Carmen Baroque altarpiece at Santa Maria Cathedral this March, uncovering significant historical data.

Led by the Catalan Center for the Restoration of Movable Property, the project identified the work as a 1714 creation by sculptor Antoni Ferrer. The discovery was made possible after removing layers of grime that had hidden the artist's handwritten inscription for centuries.

"I would dare to say that centuries of dirt had hidden these inscriptions."

The restoration addressed woodworm infestations and structural weaknesses dating back to the Spanish Civil War. This marks the fifth major altarpiece recovered in the cathedral's ongoing preventive conservation program, which now turns its focus toward restoring the Renaissance gates at the main entrance.
