This initiative represents a gesture of justice and reparation for Francisco Margalef, who died in Gusen, and Antonio Povill, Tomàs Salaet, and Joaquín Cid, who were liberated from Mauthausen and Aurigny, respectively. The stones, created by German artist Gunter Demnig, will be located in the Plaça de Farnós and Vizcarro.
“"A person is never forgotten if their name is not forgotten."
The commemorative act will be attended by the Minister of Justice and Democratic Quality, Ramon Espadaler, and the mayor of Benifallet, Mercè Pedret. The Benifallet School and the musical group Rampaire will also participate, adding an educational and cultural component to the day.
This placement culminates a process that began in 2020, when the Benifallet City Council unanimously approved the request to install the Stolpersteine. This impulse led to the 'Stolpersteine Benifallet' project, which includes the publication of Mireia Margalef Castillo's book, 'Quatre deportats benifalletencs als camps nazis', published by Amigues i Amics de l'Ebre.
The pieces, handcrafted by the artist himself, aim for everyone who encounters them to remember the struggle for freedom and the suffering of those who should not be forgotten. It is worth noting that Francisco Margalef's stone already has its own Stolpersteine in Olesa de Montserrat.
The installation of the memory stones is part of the IV Democratic Memory Days of Benifallet, which will begin on Friday, May 15, with the presentation of Ernest Cid's book, 'Gabriel escriu a les Roselles', and a musical performance by Pep Gamote 'LoReservat'. On Saturday, May 16, in addition to the placement, there will be a tour of memory sites led by Albert Doliu, a conference by journalist Sònia Castelló on 'Divisionarios azules de les Terres de l'Ebre, una aproximació històrica', and the screening of the film 'La invasió dels bàrbars', followed by a discussion with its director, Vicent Montsonís.
