Work on the new elevators that will link the heart of Tortosa with the Verge de la Cinta Hospital is progressing according to schedule, reaching one of the most prominent stages of the project. This initiative is consolidating as one of the most significant investments by the Generalitat in urban mobility and accessibility in the Terres de l'Ebre, as part of the hospital's expansion, which will include a new building.
The construction is generating a considerable visual impact between Teodor Gonzàlez street and Despuig street, behind the old Fèmina cinema, in the city center. The area, previously an unused space with containers and a vegetated slope, now accommodates the two elevator groups and the beginning of the walkways.
The project, a long-standing demand from citizens and healthcare professionals, involves the installation of two panoramic elevators that will overcome a significant elevation difference (32 meters) between the urban core and the hospital center, which is located on top of a hill. The main objective is to facilitate access for patients, family members, and staff, reducing reliance on private vehicles and improving pedestrian connections.
In addition to the elevators, the intervention includes the construction of a set of walkways that will ensure an accessible and safe route to the hospital's main entrance. These walkways, currently in the structuring phase, are designed to integrate harmoniously with the surroundings and guarantee the continuity of the pedestrian path.
The Generalitat emphasizes that this action not only resolves a long-standing accessibility problem but also contributes to decongesting road access to the Verge de la Cinta Hospital, especially during peak hours. The Tortosa City Council has positively assessed the progress of the works, highlighting their impact on the city's daily mobility, as they will allow access to the hospital from the expansion area.
Work will continue in the coming months with the installation of the elevator mechanisms and the completion of the walkways. The Generalitat estimates that the entire infrastructure will become operational by the end of this year, once safety and homologation tests have been successfully completed.
The elevators represent an investment of 5.9 million euros, out of the total of 45 million planned for the comprehensive expansion and improvement of the hospital center.
