The Civil Guard captain from Tortosa, Francisco Acera Martín, played a key role in the February 23, 1981 coup attempt, according to documents recently declassified by the Spanish Government.

The files confirm that Acera Martín, who was stationed in the Baix Ebre capital at the time, was responsible for reading General Milans del Bosch's manifesto inside the Congress. He was sentenced to three years in prison in 1983 for military rebellion.

"I arrived around 6:25 PM at Plaza de Neptuno and since I had orders to wait until 6:30, we waited until that time when we headed towards Congress."
