The environmentalists presented the objections against the project promoted by Biosalas SL because they believe it “does not correspond to the type of sustainable project the territory needs.” They argue that the PEUA is essential to locate the plant as planned, but its purpose is to qualify the area as an infrastructure and technical services system to implement a plant under “the excuse of being a service” rather than an industry.
“"Therefore, the plant is not a system of technical services infrastructure, and simply for this reason, the processing of the PEUA in this space is not appropriate."
According to the organization, there is an “erroneous” classification of the activity, as a biogas/biomethane plant “must be considered an industrial activity for obtaining biogas for energy purposes.” In fact, they state that the promoting company itself defines it this way in several sections of its proposal.
The objections also focus on the treatment of waste used to obtain biogas, the lack of specification of its origin, and information on the final destination of the digestate (solid and liquid). There is concern about the potential use of selectively collected municipal organic matter (FORSU line) as a complement to make the process profitable, thereby losing a valuable resource for local agriculture.
Furthermore, GETE-Ecologistes en Acció emphasizes that the digestion process does not eliminate nitrogen from livestock waste. They warn that a significant part of the Baix Ebre area is already classified as vulnerable due to contamination by this compound. The organization warns that if the PEUA processing moves forward, they will also present objections to the Environmental Impact Statement (DIA).
