Friends, family, and colleagues of Antonio Serrano gathered in Tortosa to pay tribute to him shortly before the first anniversary of his death in the line of duty during the Baix Ebre fire. Serrano, a figure deeply connected to the world of sports, particularly football, was remembered through two matches played at the Josep Otero stadium.
Players wore special jerseys designed for the occasion, featuring his name, face, and the number 1 that Serrano wore as a goalkeeper. This detail highlighted his passion for the sport and his ties to various local clubs. A minute of silence was observed before each match in his memory.
“"It couldn't have been any other way; his face had to be where the crest is, we wanted him to be very present."
The family, while acknowledging the day's difficulty, expressed gratitude for everyone's involvement in organizing the tribute. According to one of his brothers, José Angel Serrano, the family intends to continue these commemorative events, with another tribute planned for Paüls on July 12th.
The Baix Ebre fire, which burned over 3,000 hectares last summer, was the context for the tragic death of Antonio Serrano while he was participating in firefighting efforts in a steep area between Paüls and Alfara de Carles.
Local and national authorities attended the event, including mayors from Tortosa and Paüls, as well as the Minister of the Interior, Núria Parlon, who presented bouquets and plaques in memory of the firefighter.
