The Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, visited Deltebre on February 19 to oversee emergency operations aimed at sealing coastal breaches caused by last weekend's intense storms.

The Government of Catalonia has authorized the Left Bank Irrigation Community to carry out urgent repairs. These actions focus on closing points where seawater flooded up to three kilometers of rice fields near the Marquesa beach area.

"We must adapt to new times. The climate has changed, storms are more frequent, and we need infrastructure based on technical criteria."

Beyond agriculture, the local aquaculture sector suffered significant losses, including the destruction of mussel platforms. The Government is considering increasing the 10 million euro aid package or expanding the official disaster zone declaration to cover irrigation infrastructure damage.

"Building protective paths is structurally vital to be prepared. We ask the Generalitat to step up."

Javier Casanova · President of the Left Bank Irrigators
