The Spanish Congress approved a reform of the Penal Code this Thursday to increase punishments for repeat offenders, supported by PSOE, PP, and Junts.

The new law received 302 votes in favor and aims to provide judges and police with more effective tools against petty theft. In Tortosa, local leaders emphasized that security is a fundamental right that must be managed with rigor and social cohesion.

"Security is not the property of the right. Security policies can be made from the left, with firmness but also with respect for rights."

The legislation now moves to the Senate for final approval. The reform also includes a plan to increase the number of judges in Catalonia to speed up legal proceedings and address the backlog in local courts.
