The Tortosa City Council formally adhered to the National Pact for the Language, promoted by the Government of Catalonia, setting a roadmap until 2030 to ensure the effective use and recognition of Catalan.

The formalization took place with the Minister of Linguistic Policy, Francesc Xavier Vila, and the Mayor of Tortosa, Mar Lleixà, accompanied by various territorial authorities, such as the delegate of the Generalitat in the Terres de l'Ebre, Joan Castor Gonell. The municipal plenary session had already approved the adherence on October 6, 2025, with the unanimous support of all municipal groups.

"We must incentivize Catalan to be the language of welcome and integration when someone arrives in Tortosa, so they can learn our language, and for Catalan to be an element of social cohesion."

The approved motion proposes the development of a municipal plan to boost Catalan and the creation of coordination spaces with local associations. In this regard, Mayor Lleixà highlighted the creation of the new Catalan Language Department, which represents a clear commitment to the defense and promotion of the language as a tool for identity.
In addition to general promotion, Lleixà stressed the importance of preserving local identity and the “Tortosí dialect,” announcing that various actions will be carried out during 2026, such as the arrival of the Correllengua Agermanat on April 23, Sant Jordi Day.
