The Mayor of Tortosa, Mar Lleixà, has welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to reject a legal challenge against the removal of the Francoist monument in the Ebro river this March 2026.

The court dismissed an appeal by the Asociación Cultural Despierta España, confirming that the 2020 decision to strip the monument of its protected status was lawful. This ruling follows previous victories in the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC).

"We are moving forward and taking steps, although we know that this judicialized process is not over yet."

Despite this legal milestone, two other court cases remain active regarding the construction licenses and the bidding process for the removal works. The local government of Tortosa maintains its commitment to finally removing the monolith from the riverbed.
