The Giants of Torroella de Montgrí have become the first Catalan popular festive imagery figures to be digitized in 3D and made available online, thanks to an initiative by the Generalitat.

The Directorate General for Popular Culture and Cultural Associativism of the Generalitat de Catalunya, with the support of the Giravolt program, has launched a pioneering project to preserve and disseminate Catalan cultural heritage through new technologies. The inclusion of the Torroella giants places Torroella de Montgrí at the forefront of this initiative to digitally document and conserve key elements of Catalan popular culture.
The 3D models of the figures are available openly and free of charge on the Sketchfab platform, allowing for detailed viewing. The primary objective of this digitization is to create a precise record for the protection and conservation of festive elements, proving especially useful for future restorations or in case of damage.
This project, developed over the past five years, has enabled the digitization of a wide array of festive imagery, including giants, capgrossos (big-heads), and bestiary figures. It has involved the collaboration of heritage conservation entities and the Agrupació del Bestiari Festiu i Popular de Catalunya (Catalan Festive and Popular Bestiary Association).
According to the Department of Culture, the project will continue with the progressive incorporation of new figures. For Torroella de Montgrí, this inclusion represents a recognition of the cultural and identity value of its giants, one of the most emblematic manifestations of popular festivities in the municipality.
