The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has announced that he will request the collaboration of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) to assist in the firefighting efforts. The fire, which is beyond the capacity to be extinguished, is of particular concern due to its right flank, given the predicted change in wind.
Civil Protection has activated the alert phase of the Special Plan for Forest Fires in Catalonia (Infocat) and has sent alerts to mobile phones to confine the Sant Pol area, the Pou de Glaç holiday camp (with 150 children in good condition), the farmhouses and homes south of Sant Pol, and the Vell Repòs urbanisation in Santa Cristina d'Aro. Subsequently, the confinement was extended to the municipalities of Calonge i Sant Antoni, Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro i S'Agaró, Cruïlles, Monells i Sant Sadurní de l'Heura, Forallac, la Bisbal d'Empordà, Llagostera, and Santa Cristina d'Aro.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have preemptively evacuated several homes in the Vell Repòs urbanisation. The head of operations for the Girona region, Ferran García, highlighted that the children confined in the holiday camp are safer in an enclosed space. The fire, advancing under the influence of the tramuntana wind, is expected to remain active for a considerable time.
The GI-660 road remains closed between kilometers 1 and 12, between Calonge and la Bisbal d'Empordà. The fire, which was reported at 09:17 AM, is evolving under the influence of the tramuntana wind, with temperatures of 32.5 degrees Celsius and 34% humidity.
The simultaneity of this fire with two other active blazes in the region, in Vilavenut (Pla de l'Estany) and Bescanó, has led to limited resources being allocated to La Bisbal d'Empordà. Firefighters are working with 53 ground crews and 11 aerial units on this fire, which has already been classified as a major incident.
