Thirty mayors and councilors from Empordà and Gironès traveled to the Catalan Parliament today to attend the debate on the CUP proposal demanding a halt to large-scale energy projects.

The delegation, which used a specially organized bus for the occasion, is composed of thirteen mayors and seventeen councilors, in addition to the president of the Baix Empordà Regional Council and the councilor for Sustainability and Climate Action. Local representatives come from various parties, including Junts, ERC, and the CUP.
The CUP proposal debated this afternoon demands a moratorium on major renewable energy projects until the Sectoral Territorial Plan for Renewable Energies (Plater) is approved in January 2027. Furthermore, the text calls for energy planning to be agreed upon beforehand with local councils, regional councils, and territorial entities.

"The unrest is spreading to rural areas everywhere because the Plater is being imposed instead of being agreed upon."

Dani Cornellà · CUP Deputy
Deputy Dani Cornellà, the promoter of the initiative, stressed that although the Girona delegation is the largest, the unrest is a “matter for the entire country.” Most of the mayors present are from Baix Empordà (Bellcaire, Foixà, la Tallada, Parlavà, Serra de Daró, Torrent, Ultramort, and Verges), but there is also representation from Gironès and Alt Empordà.
