The Palafrugell City Council and the newspaper El Punt Avui are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the birth of the newspaper Avui with an event on Friday, November 13, at the Museu del Suro.

The event, titled “Catalan as a unifying link: the role of the media,” will focus on the importance of media in the recovery, normalization, and dissemination of the Catalan language, as well as the current challenges facing Catalan journalism. The event will begin at 6 PM.
It will feature interventions by Jordi Grau, vice-president of El Punt Avui and president of the Girona delegation of the College of Journalists of Catalonia; Enric Serra, a journalist linked to El Punt Avui; and Marta Padrós, head of the Office of Catalan in Palafrugell.
The commemoration will also include a recognition of the co-participants of Avui, the nearly 34,000 people who financially contributed to the creation of the newspaper, a pioneering formula of citizen participation that today could be compared to crowdfunding.
The newspaper Avui was launched on April 23, 1976, coinciding with Sant Jordi's Day, and was the first general information newspaper published entirely in Catalan after the Civil War. In 2011, Avui and El Punt merged to form the current El Punt Avui. Throughout 2026, events are being held across Catalonia to commemorate this half-century of Catalan journalism.
