The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has presented the start of the bathing campaign on metropolitan beaches, with 30 km of coastline renovated and ready to welcome visitors after a winter with storms.

The start of the bathing season on the beaches of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) arrives marked by an exhaustive renovation of furniture and improvements in access, after a particularly harsh winter with sea storms that have severely affected the coastline. The presentation event was held at La Murtra beach in Viladecans, with the presence of the mayor of this town, Olga Morales, the executive vice-president of the AMB, Antonio Balmón, and the AMB manager, Ramon Torra.
The actions include the improvement of 30 km of beaches, with adapted, inclusive facilities that promote healthy habits, contributing to the ecological preservation of dune systems. The third phase of landscape improvement at the accesses to La Pineda and La Murtra beaches has been completed, with an investment of over €178,000, involving the removal of invasive vegetation, planting of native species, and improvement of the ground surfaces.
This winter's storms have aggravated sand erosion, with estimated losses of 180,000 m³ and a 34% decrease in beach surface area along the northern metropolitan coastline. Despite this, metropolitan beaches receive around 11 million visitors during high season, with a perceived quality of almost 8 out of 10.

"Metropolitan beaches are the main leisure option for many families. That is why the AMB has the duty to maintain this space in perfect condition. We are suffering severe coastal erosion and will continue to demand a medium and long-term stabilization plan from the Generalitat government and the State. The AMB is willing to allocate up to 20 million euros to this strategy if other administrations join in."

Antonio Balmón · Executive Vice-president of the AMB
Ramon Torra highlighted the constant investment in furniture and equipment to offer a quality public service, while Olga Morales emphasized the improvements in Viladecans, including a Local Police module and the extension of public transport hours to the beach, which will be free on weekends.
New features for this season include 100 m more of adapted access, 3 new first-aid modules, 4 auxiliary rescue modules, a new adapted toilet, a pilot test with an elevated walkway for people with disabilities, information signs about biodiversity, fencing to protect endangered species, and the installation of adapted benches.
A comparative study using LIDAR sensors has detailed the loss of 180,000 m³ of sand and a 34% decrease in surface area on the northern metropolitan coastline, as well as a 29% reduction on the beaches of Barcelona and an annual loss of 160,000 m³ on the beaches of the Llobregat delta.
