The director of the Catalan Traffic Service, Ramon Lamiel, announced Wednesday the closure of the AP-7 southbound near Martorell due to a risk of collapse, with the disruption expected to last several days.

The restriction on Catalonia's main road communication route was implemented after the Ministry of Transport detected a risk of collapse in the infrastructure, believed to be linked to the train accident that occurred in Gelida the day before, which resulted in one death and 37 injuries.

"This is a road safety intervention. It was requested by the road owner because there was some risk of collapse."

Lamiel explained that the measure affects the entire southbound direction of the highway, impacting an estimated 120,000 vehicles and 25,000 heavy vehicles daily. Suggested alternatives include the A-2 up to Igualada and the C-15, considered the “most feasible” due to its good performance.
The C-25 is also recommended for travel to the center of the peninsula starting from Cassà de la Selva, along with options like the C-58, the B-40, the C-32 along the coast, and the B-24 along the pre-coastal area. Drivers will be able to rejoin the AP-7 at Vilafranca del Penedès, aiming to “balance” the affected traffic.
