The Catalan Traffic Service closed the AP-7 motorway southbound near Martorell starting at 6:00 PM on Wednesday as a safety measure following the major rail accident in Gelida.

The decision to close the motorway was made after a retaining wall collapsed onto the train tracks in Gelida, causing an accident with one fatality and over thirty injuries, and interrupting the Rodalies rail service across Catalonia. The closure of the AP-7, requested by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, is due to the risk of further structural collapse in the area.

"This is a road safety intervention."

Ramon Lamiel · Director of the Catalan Traffic Service
The director of the Catalan Traffic Service, Ramon Lamiel, announced the closure of the southbound motorway lanes starting at 6:00 PM this Wednesday. Lamiel confirmed that the decision was requested by the Ministry of Transport because there was an existing risk of structural collapse.
Initially, the Ministry had requested closing the AP-7 in both directions, but it was finally agreed to restrict traffic only southbound to minimize the impact on mobility. The closure will remain in place for the next few days, pending new technical evaluations scheduled for this Thursday to determine the specific duration of the restriction.
While the restriction is active, vehicles are being diverted onto alternative routes depending on their destination, including the C-25 towards the interior, the N-340 and C-15 towards Penedès, the C-32 along the coast, and the C-58 / B-40 connecting with the A-2 at Martorell.
