The southern metropolitan area of Barcelona, including Baix Llobregat and L'Hospitalet, faces a unique opportunity to consolidate a world-class biosanitary cluster with three major projects.

The near-simultaneous deployment of the Biopol Granvia in L'Hospitalet, the Porta Diagonal project in Esplugues, and the future Campus Clínic will consolidate a powerful biosanitary cluster. This will place this metropolitan strip south of Barcelona in the world's first division for health, research, and innovation. This exceptional juncture can define the economic, social, and urban future of the territory for decades.
This reality is supported by compelling figures. According to the report 'La metròpolis de Barcelona. Invertir, treballar i viure 2025' (The Metropolis of Barcelona. Investing, Working, and Living 2025) by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area and the Chamber of Commerce, the current ecosystem already hosts 54 health and biotechnology companies, which generate over 2.275 billion euros annually and employ 10,000 professionals.

"The Clínic is not just a health infrastructure, but a tool for the country. The goal is to create the best hospital in Europe, both in care, research, and training."

The combined projects require an investment close to 2 billion euros and could generate an economic impact exceeding 15 billion euros, in addition to up to 50,000 jobs, equivalent to 8.5% of Catalonia's GDP.
With a timeline placing the first works between 2027 and 2030, and full realization towards 2035, the administrations involved, including the Generalitat and the city councils of L'Hospitalet and Esplugues, must act with coordination and rigor to avoid chronic delays, such as those that affected the B-25 highway in Sant Boi.
