Socialist Miquel Cervelló was sworn in this Saturday as the new mayor of Riba-roja d’Ebre, succeeding Antonio Suárez, in accordance with a government agreement.

The mayoral handover in Riba-roja d’Ebre was formalized in an extraordinary plenary session with five votes in favor and four against. The legislative pact between the PSC and Més Riba-roja d’Ebre – Compromís Municipal stipulated that Suárez would govern for the first three years and Cervelló would assume the position in the final year of the term. During this period, Cervelló served as the first deputy mayor, overseeing Social Welfare, Sports, Health, and Environment.
In his investiture speech, Cervelló, deeply rooted in the town and with a background as a carpenter, expressed his humility and affection for the municipality. He thanked the outgoing mayor, municipal workers, and citizens for their contributions. His priorities will be to listen to residents, maintain ongoing projects, address the challenge of depopulation, and preserve coexistence, demonstrating his commitment to being an accessible mayor.
A special appeal was made to young people, acknowledging the sacrifice involved in staying in the town and emphasizing the need for their ideas and energy for the municipality's future. Cervelló highlighted that retaining and attracting young people is an imperative and achievable goal, and that the council must facilitate this decision to ensure a balanced and sustainable future for Riba-roja d’Ebre.

A society that grows in a balanced and sustainable way needs vibrant towns, and to have vibrant towns we need young people who want to stay and young people who want to come.
