The director of the Servei Català de Trànsit, Ramon Lamiel, announced on Wednesday, January 21, the closure of the AP-7 in Martorell southbound due to the risk of collapse stemming from the rail accident in Gelida.

The closure of the AP-7 motorway southbound near Martorell became effective from 6:00 PM and will remain in place for several days. This road safety measure is implemented as a consequence of the accident involving a Rodalies train in Gelida, which resulted in one fatality.

"It is a road safety intervention. It has been requested by the road owner because there was some risk of collapse."

Ramon Lamiel · Director of the Catalan Traffic Service
As explained by Lamiel, the Ministry of Transport, the road owner, requested the restriction after detecting a risk of collapse in the affected area. Although the initial request was to close the AP-7 in both directions, it was agreed to limit it only to the southbound direction to minimize the impact on mobility.
It is anticipated that the tasks to extract the damaged train will be carried out during the night. Once removed, a second expert assessment will be conducted on Thursday, which will allow for a more precise determination of the exact duration of the motorway closure.
