The Sant Vicenç dels Horts City Council has launched an awareness campaign to improve the selective collection of organic waste, aiming to reduce incorrect items in the brown bins.

The Sant Vicenç dels Horts City Council is launching an awareness campaign this month to improve the quantity and quality of waste deposited in the brown bin, which is for organic matter. This initiative is another step towards increasing the municipality's selective collection, in line with current regulations and the challenge of the climate emergency. The campaign's slogan, “Only organic in the organic bin,” will emphasize the importance of correctly separating this fraction and avoiding contaminants.
The Councilor for Environment and Energy Transition, David Ruiz, highlighted the importance of engaging in this key challenge for the future of the city and the planet. He recalled that “with a simple gesture, we can make a great contribution to the environment” and detailed what waste should be deposited in the brown bin, such as food scraps, peels, cork stoppers, toothpicks, matches, coffee grounds, or kitchen paper without printed inks.
Currently, Sant Vicenç dels Horts has a selective collection rate of 36%, below the 60% target set by the European Union for 2030. The campaign focuses on the organic fraction, which represents the largest portion of household waste.
The campaign will run for two months, until Saturday, November 28, and will combine street information and awareness actions with educational activities in various municipal facilities.
An itinerant information point will be set up, touring different areas of the municipality. Environmental education staff will answer queries and offer practical advice. The point will also feature a recycling game, and participants will receive compostable bags and campaign materials. The information point will operate on Thursdays from 4 PM to 8 PM; Fridays from 10 AM to 1 PM and 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM; and Saturdays from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
In parallel, educational activities will be organized in community centers and municipal facilities to work on waste separation and the proper use of the brown bin. Dates and locations will be available on the website: svh.cat/municipi/per-temes/residus/.
The campaign will be complemented by posters, videos, and social media content, featuring residents explaining how to correctly separate organic waste. Through these actions, the City Council aims to provide citizens with the necessary information and tools to improve waste separation.
