The investment of over two million euros will replace all existing receptacles with a lower, side-loading model designed for universal access.

The Calafell City Council, through the municipal company CEMSSA, has awarded the purchase of 1,620 new waste containers for 2.1 million euros, expected to be fully implemented by mid-summer.

The new model, awarded to the company Formato Verde, is highly accessible, designed specifically to facilitate use by the elderly or those with reduced mobility. The receptacles are lower (1.49 meters), feature open mouths or tilting doors, and do not require pedals or handles.

"The truck stop is shorter, which reduces CO2 emissions and minimizes noise pollution and street occupation."

Ramon Ferré · Mayor of Calafell
The total investment amounts to 2,107,075.08 euros. The planned implementation period is 16 weeks from the contract signing, allowing the complete launch of the new collection system by mid-summer, provided there are no legal challenges.
The new side-loading system avoids having to lift the lid, another element that, along with urban integration, seeks to encourage the correct use of containers and improve selective collection rates.

"We must increase the percentage of selective collection, which is still low, and the more facilities we provide, the more progress we will make. Furthermore, the more accessible waste disposal is, the less excuse there will be to leave garbage outside."
