The mayor of Calafell, Ramon Ferré, has once again defended the decision to remove benches from Catalunya avenue in Segur de Calafell, a measure aimed at tackling the insecurity reported by residents. Ferré argues that this action intends to hinder the gathering of "problematic groups" moving between the port, the train station, and the aforementioned avenue.
In the municipal plenary session, the mayor pointed out that the removal of benches has already been successfully implemented in Alcalde Romeu square in the beach area. However, the opposition has expressed concern that these groups might move to other areas of the municipality, reminding Ferré that "he is the mayor of the entire municipality".
The local police councilor, Marc Casellas, explained that patrols in the area have been increased and joint operations with the Mossos d’Esquadra are underway, while acknowledging the difficulty of maintaining constant police presence.
“"In the area there was a serious problem."
The mayor recalled the commitment of the Minister of the Interior, Nuria Parlon, to establish a Mossos d’Esquadra district police station in the area, a reality expected within the next two years. Currently, they are awaiting the Generalitat's surface area requirements to select a suitable property.
The plan is for the new police facilities, which will serve Calafell and Cunit, to be located in Mediterrani square in Segur de Calafell, near Catalunya avenue. The City Council has focused on a former hotel building, which currently houses a hospitality venue on its ground floor. The mayor emphasized that, although the Generalitat would cover the construction, the council will be responsible for acquiring the property, either through purchase or expropriation.
