Torrential Rains Set Records: Up to 200 Liters in El Vendrell and Torredembarra

Intense precipitation has caused flooding, disrupting rail and road traffic, and leaving images of damage along the coast of Tarragonès and Baix Penedès.

El Vendrell and Torredembarra have registered up to 200 liters per square meter of rain between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, causing floods and severely impacting mobility in the area.

The rainfall has been particularly intense in the northern coast of Tarragonès and the southern part of Baix Penedès. In El Vendrell, 100 liters accumulated in just three hours, reaching a total of 145 liters, while Torredembarra recorded 136.8 liters and Calafell, 109.4 liters. This situation has led to torrential downpours in some areas, exceeding 40 liters in half an hour, with records of up to 54.5 liters in 30 minutes in Torredembarra.
Rail traffic has been severely affected. Lines R2 Sud, R4, R13, R14, R15, R16, R17, and RT2 were interrupted due to flooding at the Sant Vicenç de Calders station. Although service was restored after 9 AM, schedules remain altered.
Road mobility has also suffered consequences. One lane is closed on the AP-7 southbound near Riera de Gaià and in El Vendrell due to damage. The N-340 was also temporarily closed due to flooding and now experiences traffic jams because of puddles.
The Catalan Water Agency has issued a hydrological warning for Baix Penedès due to the potential for sudden increases in the flow of rivers, streams, and ravines.

Residents in the area are assessing the damage to their homes. Joan Coll, who lives near Avinguda del Mar in Creixell, noted that the sewage system could not handle the intensity of the water. Daniel Caceres, from El Vendrell, highlighted that house gutters nearly broke and that the water carried a lot of debris.
