The volume, which is part of the collection Corpus international des timbres amphoriques ; 37, has been edited by Cèsar Carreras, Montserrat Comas, and Josep Guitart. The publication is the result of collaboration between the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC), the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC), and the Badalona Museum.
Baetulo: marques i terrisseries d’àmfores is the fifth volume in the Catalan series and focuses entirely on the city's epigraphy, including amphora stamps, pottery workshops, and wine producers. While the first volume, published twenty-eight years ago, compiled 235 stamps, this new edition provides 614, nearly triple the amount.
The city now boasts the highest number of stamps among the coastal cities of Tarraconensis, even surpassing Tarraco and Empúries.
This massive finding underscores the importance of Baetulo, suggesting it was likely the main export port for Laietan wine between the late Republic and the beginning of the High Empire, thus being the reference point for Laietan wine in the Roman era.
The book includes the catalog of stamps studied by Montserrat Comas and Cèsar Carreras, in addition to four articles by various researchers on the subject. The presentation this Friday will be led by the editors Cèsar Carreras and Montserrat Comas, along with author Clara Forn and Piero Berni, from the ICAC.
