The winning team, composed of industrial designers Ester Pujol and Ander Lizaso, has been selected to develop the elements that will unify the terraces of restaurants and bars on La Rambla. The competition, organized by ADI-FAD with the support of the Barcelona City Council, aimed to position the city as a benchmark in public space design.
The 'Areny' project is based on the concepts of arch and transparency, reinterpreting historical formal elements of La Rambla with a contemporary perspective. The proposal stands out for its modular capability, offering various options for closures and planter heights, and for its formal simplicity and elegance.
The competition involved the design of three key pieces: the terrace space delimiting element, the information board, and the auxiliary furniture. The winning project was chosen from proposals by eight finalist teams and was unanimously praised by the jury for its quality and integration into the urban environment.
In the next phase, the winning team, along with production company UNNOM, will develop prototypes in collaboration with stakeholders and the Barcelona City Council. This project will be included in the style guide to reinforce La Rambla's identity as an emblematic avenue.
The initiative is part of the terrace redevelopment promoted by the City Council to adapt the promenade to its new urban model, prioritizing pedestrian space and enhancing the quality of the commercial, cultural, and gastronomic offerings.
