The Barcelona City Council has required Telefónica to immediately remove four utility access covers featuring the Stranger Things series, installed in late 2025, for violating municipal advertising regulations.

The campaign, aimed at promoting the fifth season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, involved replacing 41 utility covers across several Spanish cities. Four of these were installed in Barcelona, specifically at Portal de l’Àngel, Sants street, and Passeig de Gràcia.
The black covers depicted the series' protagonists on bicycles, and below them, the Upside Down, the dark, subterranean world inhabited by creatures like the Demogorgon. This intervention quickly became a viral campaign, with thousands of fans taking selfies with the covers.

"They violate municipal regulations regarding the use of the urban landscape, as they constitute an intervention with a promotional purpose."

The Barcelona council has expedited the request for the restitution of the original covers, arguing that municipal regulations expressly prohibit advertising activities on public domain elements not specifically intended for that purpose. The City Council threatens to initiate administrative actions if Telefónica fails to comply with the removal.
