Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will invest up to 200 million euros in the new Barcelona Metro cleaning contract until June 2031, responding to the record increase in passengers.

The new Barcelona Metro cleaning contract, soon to be tendered, foresees a maximum outlay of 188 million euros over the next five years, exceeding the amount paid between 2021 and 2026 by 45 million. This increase is justified by the rise in passengers, as the network closed 2025 with record figures.

The total investment estimated by TMB until mid-2031 will be around 200 million euros, including the nearly 20 million allocated to repairing vandalism damage. The contract is divided into six lots covering the nine metro lines, the funicular, the Montjuïc Cable Car, and the Tramvia Blau.
The new concession, which anticipates over a million service hours and a staff of more than 800 workers, will focus on "much deeper cleaning," including hard-to-reach areas like ceilings and corners. The use of autonomous robots will also be promoted to reduce water consumption by 80%, saving about 2.7 million liters.
