Starting this April 7, Barcelona metro lines L1 and L5, the busiest routes, will reinforce their service with an additional train each during the morning peak hours to enhance network capacity.

This measure by Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB) aims to optimize the metro network's capacity. With the incorporation of these trains, the interval between services from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM will be significantly reduced. Specifically, on L5, the waiting time will be just 2 minutes and 24 seconds, while on L1, it will be set at 3 minutes.
Regarding the fleet, L1 will operate with 35 simultaneous trains in circulation, and L5 will reach 38. This increase responds to the constant rise in passenger numbers experienced by the Barcelona metro, exacerbated by the Rodalies crisis.

"The efficiency of the Barcelona metro means it is increasingly used by citizens as a public transport, and the Rodalies crisis has further increased passenger numbers at specific points in the network."

Laia Bonet · President of TMB
The President of TMB, Laia Bonet, highlighted that measures are being activated to improve peak hour service and offer more capacity. She thanked the organization's professionals for their efforts in maintaining an excellent service, which has received an 8 out of 10 satisfaction rating from users, despite continuous passenger growth.
This reinforcement coincides with the resumption of the school year after Easter Week. The increased service on L5 also benefits from the bretelle-type switches incorporated during track renovation works in the summer of 2024 between Cornellà and Collblanc stations, which allow for a greater number of trains. By the end of 2024, one train, the 37th, had already been added to this line, and now one more is being incorporated.
It is worth noting that L1 trains are wider due to the old Iberian gauge (1,674 mm), which differs from the standard gauge of the rest of the network (1,435 mm). This characteristic allows L1 to absorb 10% more passengers than other lines. Lines 1 and 5 carry more than half of the total passengers across the entire metro network. The increase in validations has been recorded not only during peak hours but also during off-peak hours in the afternoon and on weekends. Additionally, other measures are being implemented, such as the presence of more professionals at stations with higher traffic to manage passenger flow and expedite entries and exits from platforms.
