The deputy mayor responsible for ecology, urban planning, and mobility policies has emphasized the need to transform the current infrastructure, which is considered obsolete. Currently, about 270,000 users enter and leave Barcelona daily by bus, with an increase in daily expeditions from 6,000 to 7,000 following the Rodalies crisis.
To address this issue, the construction of three key underground stations is planned: one in Sagrera, another in Plaça d'Espanya, and a third on Diagonal avenue. These new infrastructures will allow connection with the metro or tram, facilitating intermodality and freeing the city center from bus traffic.
“"The goal is that the number of interurban buses reaching the center of Barcelona must be drastically reduced. We need to create the infrastructure for this to happen and facilitate intermodality at these points."
In the short term, the remodeling and updating of about twenty interurban bus stops are planned, with projects to be executed in 2026 and works starting in 2027. In the medium to long term, major interchanges will be tendered. The proposal includes the possibility of extending metro L3 to the new Hospital Clínic and to Esplugues and Sant Feliu de Llobregat, as well as L4 from La Pau to Sagrera, considered an urgent and priority project to connect the high-speed train station.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the city council is also committed to the decarbonization of bus fleets and the creation of bus lanes on roads such as the B-23, C-58, and C-32, where significant improvements in speed and an increase in demand of between 10% and 25% have already been observed.
