The two winning proposals, submitted by companies Kapsch and Acisa, will each receive 100,000 euros to carry out a four-month pilot test at different city intersections. These initiatives aim to adapt traffic light management to real-time mobility and improve traffic prediction and coordination, aligning with Barcelona's sustainable mobility goals.
The call for proposals received significant international interest, with 26 submissions from 14 different countries. The projects are scheduled to begin by the end of the year and will serve as a preliminary phase for the deployment of AI in the city's traffic light regulation, in collaboration with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
The Matcab proposal from Kapsch presents a system that uses AI to adapt traffic light regulation in real-time based on the demand at each intersection, employing reinforcement learning and coordinated intersection agents. This proposal, with a total budget of 358,185 euros, will also allow for the activation of priority models for pedestrians, public transport, or emergency services.
Meanwhile, Mobia, from the company Acisa, proposes a system that creates a digital replica of the road network to predict and coordinate intersections along a corridor. This 'digital twin' will use real-time data from sensors and connected vehicles to anticipate mobility trends and modify traffic light cycles. The budget for this pilot test is 177,865 euros.
During the presentation of these proposals at Tomorrow Mobility, as part of the Smart City Expo World Congress, the incorporation of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM) as new BILM partners was formalized. This expansion consolidates BILM as a leading collaboration space for mobility in Barcelona.
Additionally, the new BILM challenge, 'Barcelona Connected Mobility', was introduced. It focuses on connected vehicle technologies (V2X) to enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and optimize public transport, preparing the city for the progressive deployment of connected mobility.
