Civil Protection has activated the Ventcat Plan alert due to the forecast of wind gusts that will exceed 70 kilometers per hour. Initially, the forecast focused on the southern coast and pre-coastal areas, but the update indicates that the strong winds will affect any point in the region throughout Saturday.
“"Care must be taken where the waves break, on seafront promenades, but also in elevated areas, small mountains near the coast where the wind can knock us down."
Deputy Director Imma Solé recalled that the wind will blow in areas “where they are not accustomed to it,” such as the coastline from Barcelona to the Ebro Delta. She mentioned that during a similar episode last week, the 112 emergency phone received more than 800 calls.
The areas of greatest intensity are expected from the Baix Llobregat area to the Ebro Delta, but caution has also been requested in the Pyrenees, where the combination of wind and recent snowfall can generate the phenomenon known as 'torb' (snowstorm). Furthermore, a considerable avalanche risk remains across the entire Pyrenean range, complicating outdoor activities.
Regarding the coast, Solé warned of the impact on Cap de Creus and Cap de Begur. She also recommended avoiding wooded areas, as the humidity from persistent rains increases the risk of falling trees or branches, and urged extreme caution while driving.
