Hospital Clínic Barcelona has been recognized in the Hospital Specialty Services category at the Sanidad #PorElClima Awards 2026 for its project «Success in implementing a strategy to reduce the impact of CO₂ emissions». This initiative, driven by the DIRAC dialysis center, demonstrates how environmental protection and climate impact reduction can be integrated into healthcare activities.
The award, presented on October 8, acknowledges a decade of work by a multidisciplinary team focused on reducing the environmental footprint of dialysis. The project has implemented measures to optimize water and energy consumption, improve waste management, and monitor CO₂ emissions per treatment session, achieving more efficient and environmentally friendly care.
The Sanidad #PorElClima Awards annually recognize initiatives from the healthcare sector that contribute to the decarbonization of the health system and the integration of environmental criteria in healthcare management. In this fifth edition, over 80 candidacies from hospitals, primary care centers, specialized services, and healthcare organizations nationwide were submitted.
The awarded initiative demonstrates the feasibility of reducing the environmental impact of complex procedures, such as dialysis, without compromising care quality or patient safety. Organizational innovation and professional involvement generate measurable environmental improvements.
This award is part of Clínic Barcelona's broader strategy to incorporate environmental sustainability as a key pillar of the institution's transformation. The center has promoted various initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint and move towards a more responsible healthcare model.
The dialysis project had already shown a reduction of 22% in CO₂ emissions associated with the center's activity, establishing itself as a benchmark experience.
Other projects complement this initiative, such as the environmental improvement plan by the Radiology Service, the incorporation of iodinated contrast recycling (Clínic was the first center in Catalonia to implement it), and the recovery of over a ton of uniform clothing for the circular economy.
All these actions align with the vision of reducing the hospital's environmental impact and advancing towards a sustainable healthcare model, protecting the health of people and the planet.
Climate change is a major challenge for global health, and the healthcare sector plays a key role in reducing its own environmental footprint. Clínic Barcelona continues to promote initiatives for more environmentally friendly healthcare.
The recognition from the Sanidad #PorElClima Awards encourages the center to continue progressing and values the work of professionals who contribute daily to a healthcare system that cares for both people and the planet.
