Uruguayan musician Guillermo McGill, based in Barcelona, is featured in a tribute marking the anniversary of the death of jazz enthusiast Jordi Bonet, highlighting McGill's influential international career.

This week pays tribute to Jordi Bonet, a jazz enthusiast who passed away on January 29, 2005. The focus is on the career of Guillermo McGill (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1965), a renowned drummer, composer, and professor whose music keeps Bonet's memory alive.
Established in Barcelona since the age of 12, McGill has developed a career marked by constant research and a unique musical language. His work dialogues with various traditions, from jazz and flamenco to contemporary music, avoiding explicit adherence to any single movement.
He began his training at the Taller de Músics de Barcelona, where he won the first prize in the National Jazz Competition for Young Performers for three consecutive years, and in 1993, the first prize in the National Jazz Composition Competition. He was a founding member of Chano Domínguez's trio, alongside Javier Colina, and participated in the famous film Calle 54, directed by Fernando Trueba.
His international projection has been consolidated, especially in the field of flamenco and jazz fusion, collaborating with major figures such as Enrique Morente, Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis, Tete Montoliu, and Jorge Pardo. He has performed on world stages including Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center.
As a leader, he has released seven albums, including Es hora de caminar (2016), which combines jazz and flamenco. In addition to his performing career, McGill has undertaken significant pedagogical work at centers such as the Higher Music Center of the Basque Country (Musikene).
