Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has presented a new tool that allows counting the number of passengers in real-time on each vehicle, a further step towards the development of the intelligent bus.

This innovation, explained during the Tomorrow Mobility World Congress 2026 held in Barcelona, uses artificial intelligence applied to images captured by the more than 4,500 video surveillance cameras across the bus fleet. The main objective is to obtain precise data on vehicle occupancy and improve camera maintenance.
The system, developed by TMB's own bus technology team in collaboration with AI experts, integrates camera data with other sources such as validations, surveys, and passenger alarms. This combined approach, along with continuous model training and audits, ensures the quality of the obtained information.
This real-time calculated data will allow for improved service regulation and better passenger information. Furthermore, the system also facilitates the detection of camera errors, such as malfunctions or incorrect focus, thereby optimizing repair times.
