The transfer of ownership of the B-23, approved by the Council of Ministers on January 27, affects the section between kilometers 0 and 7.1, a vital access point to the Catalan capital. This cession was formalized through a royal decree. The execution of the bus-VAO lane works, which involved an investment of 20.8 million euros financed by the Ministry of Transport with European funds, had already been commissioned to the Generalitat in July 2022.
The works began in the spring of 2023 and took place between the junction with the A-2 in Sant Feliu de Llobregat and the intersection of Diagonal Avenue with Albert Bastardas Avenue in Barcelona. The new lane, open to traffic since October, is 3.5 meters wide and was enabled by utilizing part of the highway's median, maintaining the number of lanes for other vehicles.
The estimated travel time saving is up to 15 minutes per journey for interurban buses accessing Barcelona.
This corridor handles a traffic intensity close to 100,000 vehicles daily and is used by more than 700 daily bus expeditions, transporting around four million passengers annually. The goal is to improve the competitiveness of public transport and reduce pollutant emissions, with an estimated decrease of 34 annual tons of carbon dioxide.
