A 61-year-old female cyclist died this Friday afternoon in Barcelona's Eixample district after being hit by a car, marking the first fatal traffic victim of 2026 in the city.

The incident occurred shortly before 3:00 PM at the intersection of Vilamarí street and Diputació, involving a car and a bicycle. The Guàrdia Urbana (City Police) has activated its Central Traffic Accident Unit to investigate the exact causes of the crash.
The Barcelona City Council immediately activated psychological support services through the Centre d’Urgències i Emergències Socials de Barcelona (CUESB) to assist the victim's family and friends, to whom they extended their condolences.
This fatality follows a year in which 2025 closed with 11 road deaths in the city. Of these, five were motorcyclists, five were pedestrians, and one was a cyclist. The last fatal accident of the previous year occurred on November 27 in Vallcarca.
