The State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI) has appointed Ángel Simón, a renowned Catalan executive, as the new chairman of Indra, a decision formalized during an extraordinary board meeting held this Wednesday.

Simón's appointment, which will not include executive functions, follows the resignation of Ángel Escribano. According to sources close to the executive, the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, played a crucial role in convincing him to accept the position.
Ángel Simón, born in Manresa in 1957 and a civil engineer, joined the Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar) group in 1995, where he held various management positions until his appointment as chairman in 2010. He also served as executive vice-president of Suez between 2013 and 2022, and as manager of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area from 1989 to 1995, during Pasqual Maragall's mayorship. More recently, between 2024 and 2025, he was CEO of Criteria Caixa.

Salvador Illa has been one of the people who convinced him to accept the position.

Escribano's departure comes after months of tensions with the Spanish Government, which controls 28% of Indra's share capital. La Moncloa had been pressing for his resignation, particularly following the failed merger attempt between Indra and the Escribano family's company, Escribano Mechanical & Engineering (EM&E).
The Government considers this operation essential to strengthen Indra's position in the European defense industry. SEPI had conditioned any progress in the merger on Escribano's departure, citing a potential conflict of interest.
