The competition started at 17:05, when the first team began the journey. The urban route passes through iconic landmarks such as the Sagrada Família, Passeig de Gràcia, and Casa Batlló, before tackling the final climb towards the Olympic Stadium.
The event was attended by institutional representatives, including the mayor of Barcelona and several government members at the opening ceremony. Cyclists had previously carried out reconnaissance of the route to memorize the curves and the condition of the pavement.
This edition recovers an unusual format, as it is the first time since 1971 that the race has started with a team time trial. The atmosphere in the Fòrum area was marked by a large turnout of fans who followed the riders' preparations.
The Catalan Grand Départ will continue on Sunday with a stage between Tarragona and Barcelona, which will include passing through Begues and the Montjuïc circuit. On Monday, the race will move from Granollers towards the French border, crossing the Vallès Oriental, Osona, the Ripollès, and the Cerdanya.
