The Barcelona City Council rejected a proposal by the PP party this Friday to ban the use of the burqa and niqab in public streets and municipal buildings.

The motion, presented by Daniel Sirera, failed to gain traction as PSC, Junts, Barcelona en Comú, and ERC all voted against it. Only Vox supported the conservative initiative, which described the garments as 'fabric prisons' for women.

"Barcelona is an open city and must have clear ideas. We cannot negotiate with women's freedom."

Deputy Mayor Maria Eugènia Gay argued that the use of such veils is extremely rare in Barcelona and stated that freedom should not be enforced through symbolic prohibitions. Other parties, such as ERC, criticized the move as an attempt to stigmatize specific religious communities.
While Junts voted against this specific proposal, they maintained that the full-face veil has no place in public life, suggesting that the issue requires a broader legal and social debate rather than a simple municipal ban.
