The Plenary Council of the Barcelona City Council approved on Friday, April 24, the incorporation of five new specimens into the Local Interest Tree Catalog, a register that identifies and protects the city's most unique vegetation.

This decision allows five trees to be integrated into the municipal register, which aims to safeguard the most outstanding specimens in the Catalan capital. The catalog highlights the importance of these “green neighbors” that enrich the daily life of Barcelona, including trees, palm trees, and shrubs present in both public spaces and private gardens.
Inclusion in this catalog implies special care to ensure their optimal growth, ensuring they continue to provide life, shade, and character to the city's various neighborhoods. Currently, Barcelona has a total of 213 catalog entries.
The five newly incorporated specimens are located in different districts: an Araucaria bidwillii in the Jardins de Can Borni, in the Sant Genís dels Agudells neighborhood (Horta-Guinardó); a hackberry (Celtis australis) on Piferrer Street, 92, in the Porta neighborhood (Nou Barris); a eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) in the garden of a house on Labèrnia Street, 2, in the Can Baró neighborhood (Horta-Guinardó); a black poplar (Populus nigra) near the Can Llevallol fountain, in Vallvidrera (Sarrià – Sant Gervasi); and a linden (Tilia platyphyllos) at the entrance of the Can Masdéu farmhouse, in the Canyelles neighborhood (Nou Barris).
This catalog is fundamental for the conservation and development of these specimens, which stand out for their rarity, species, age, dimensions, historical value, or morphological and aesthetic qualities, being an essential part of Barcelona's urban landscape.
