The Catalan Parliament approved on Wednesday a significant increase in the tourist tax for Barcelona, set to take effect on April 1st amid industry concerns.

The new legislation, supported by PSC, ERC, and Comuns, will double the regional tax for luxury stays to 7 euros. When combined with the city's 5-euro municipal surcharge, guests in five-star hotels will face a daily charge of 12 euros.

"It will be necessary to monitor the impact that this measure may have on the activity and those most strategic segments."

Jordi Clos · President of the Barcelona Hotel Guild
Elisenda Alamany, leader of ERC in the City Council, noted that the municipal surcharge will continue to rise by one euro annually until reaching 8 euros in 2029. The city expects to collect 160 million euros annually from this tax by the end of the decade.
