The Government of Catalonia has agreed to transfer the necessary funds to Barcelonès for the construction of four new elderly residences in the city of Barcelona. It is expected that these centers, which will provide approximately 360 places, will be operational by 2031 at the latest.
The Department of Social Rights and Inclusion will allocate around 50 million euros to BIMSA (Barcelona d'Infraestructures Municipals), the municipal public company that will be responsible for contracting and executing the construction work. This agreement, signed by counselor Raül Moreno and mayor Jaume Collboni, aims to speed up processes and give the city more direct control over the construction.
Moreno highlighted the Barcelona City Council's experience in managing construction projects and criticized the lack of investment in new residences by previous Generalitat governments over the past fifteen years. The mayor emphasized that the transfer of funds and the delegation of tasks will allow for shorter deadlines and guarantee residents' right to age in their neighborhoods.
The new residences will be built in areas such as l'Esquerra de l'Eixample, Marina del Prat Vermell, the district of Sant Andreu, and Glòries. The Casernes center is the most advanced in project drafting. Each center will have around 90 places and a budget of between 12 and 13 million euros, complying with regulatory standards, including air conditioning.
Counselor Moreno also announced that more than half of the 3,232 new residence places promised for Catalonia as a whole have already been created, with at least 6,000 intended to be met before the end of the legislature to reduce waiting lists, which currently have about 15,000 people.
