The Barcelona City Council presented on Tuesday a comprehensive action plan to improve cleanliness and waste management throughout the Ciutat Vella district.

Starting this March, the initiative will deploy 130 specific actions and 42 major projects. This strategy follows a year-long pilot program that successfully reduced illegal waste dumping by up to 42% in certain neighborhoods of the old city.
Key improvements include increasing the frequency of street washing and container disinfection. The city will also introduce nine mobile recycling points and more litter bins to discourage residents and visitors from leaving trash bags on the pavement.
In areas like Raval and Barceloneta, street cleaning frequencies are expected to rise by 45%. The local government also plans to increase inspections to ensure proper waste disposal and combat anti-social behavior regarding urban hygiene.
