A team of surgeons from Barcelona achieved a technological milestone by successfully operating on eleven patients in the Canary Islands last February using a robotic tele-surgery system.

The project utilizes the Edge Medical robot, a system consisting of mechanical arms in the operating room and a remote control console. This technology allows experts to perform complex oncological procedures from thousands of kilometers away.
The initiative, involving doctor Pablo Juárez del Dago, serves as a European pilot program. Organizers are already in talks with international hospitals to replicate this virtual hospital model in remote or underserved areas.
All patients treated so far were discharged within 48 hours. While currently focused on urology, the European Robotics Society is working to expand the program to other medical specialties soon.
