The Barcelona metro is reinforcing its infrastructure with the incorporation of electric generators and new trains equipped with emergency systems, aiming to prevent service interruptions during future power outages.

Following the experience of a power outage a year ago, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has developed a plan to guarantee the energy security of the metro network. This initiative includes the installation of generators to maintain the operation of essential services.
The installation of these generators will ensure that public address systems remain operational and that stopped trains can move to the nearest station, thus avoiding evacuations via the tracks. The first generator will be located at the Sagrera control center before the end of the year.

"We have made good use of these months, basically to learn from the experience and prevent it from happening again in the future."

Laia Bonet · First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council and President of TMB
The generators, which will run on diesel, will be installed in the Triangle Ferroviari. This system, described as "more complex" than previous ones, will allow internal communication systems in elevators, technical rooms, and lighting to remain active.
Furthermore, the next nine trains to be incorporated into the TMB fleet will be equipped with the 'last mile' system. This technology will enable trains to autonomously reach the nearest station in the event of supply cuts or other incidents.
