Barcelona City Council has presented a new strategic plan for municipal markets, which includes an investment of 100 million euros until 2031 to complete the renovation of ten pending facilities.

The project, covering the 2026-2036 period, aims to finalize the renovation of the city's market network. Among the spaces to be renovated are the Boqueria, Mercè, Galvany, Estrella, Horta, Sant Martí, Felip II, Hostafrancs, and Canyelles markets. Additionally, the Abaceria market is scheduled to reopen this autumn following its comprehensive remodeling.
The council highlights that markets act as hubs for social cohesion and climate shelters. The strategic plan focuses on professionalizing operators, digitizing services, and improving physical accessibility to remove architectural barriers, while ensuring the sustainability of the facilities.
According to municipal data, Barcelona's markets generate an annual economic impact of 561 million euros in GDP and employ over 7,500 people. Currently, the network has 1,900 stalls, with more than 95% in operation, receiving nearly 70 million visits annually.
